Rescue teams searching the Java Sea on Sunday recovered 103 survivors after Indonesian passenger ship Virgo Transport 8 went missing overnight with 243 people aboard. One person was found dead. The search continued for 140 more.
The ship set out from Surabaya on Saturday, bound for Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan. It ran into bad weather during the crossing. Contact was lost in the early hours of Sunday, and the last known position placed the ship about 148 kilometres from the Banjarmasin pier.
Indonesia's national rescue agency, Basarnas, coordinated the operation with the navy and police. Rough seas reached 2.5 metres, slowing the search.
