A fire broke out aboard the passenger ferry Mutiara Sentosa 2 on the morning of August 2, while the ship was crossing the Java Sea from Surabaya to Makassar. The fire was reported off Madura Island. Indonesia's coast guard deployed five ships and a helicopter.
There were 271 people on board. Rescuers pulled 225 to safety. Five bodies were recovered. Between 28 and 41 people remained missing as of August 3, with figures differing by source and time of report.
The ship was carrying 181 vehicles at the time of the fire.
The cause of the fire was not established. Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee opened an investigation.
The operator is PT Atosim Lampung Pelayaran.
