On July 21, a Russian naval frigate fired live rounds in the English Channel, about 40 miles south of Plymouth. Britain's defence ministry confirmed it. The frigate was the Neustrashimy, from Russia's Baltic Fleet.
The Neustrashimy notified HMS Tyne, a British patrol ship, before opening fire and asked it to move to a safer position. The exercise ran for about 30 minutes in international waters.
UK Defence Minister Wes Streeting called the episode 'performative and irresponsible.' The firing took place on the first day in office for Britain's new Prime Minister Andy Burnham.
