One Dead and 72 Rescued After Migrant Boat Carrying 110 Crosses the English Channel

French coastguard crews pulled 72 people from the water and pronounced one dead after a boat carrying more than 110 migrants was tracked near Gravelines on 29 August.

The boat was monitored overnight from Thursday into Friday as it attempted the crossing from northern France toward the UK. When rescue teams reached it, one person was unresponsive and needed CPR. A helicopter was dispatched but the person was declared dead. Three others were injured, one of them seriously.

The crossing came one day after 494 migrants reached the UK on Thursday, the first successful crossings in ten days.

The English Channel has seen recurring rescues through the summer. a dinghy engine failure off Le Touquet left 96 people in the water before crews brought them to Boulogne-sur-Mer.
