QNa 90859 TS left An Hoa port in Quang Nam province on July 29, 2026, carrying 50 people. The squid-fishing boat headed into the South China Sea and worked its way deep into remote waters. On August 25 at 12:54 pm, its monitoring system sent a position fix: roughly 540 nautical miles from Da Nang, about 35 nautical miles west of An Bang Island in the Truong Sa zone of Khanh Hoa Province.
That was the last signal.
Border guards and the Regional Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre launched a search after contact was lost. Nearby fishing boats joined coast guard cutters in the effort. By August 28, rescue teams had recovered 32 of the 50 crew members, Tuoi Tre News reported. Eighteen remain unaccounted for as of that date.
Vietnam News said search operations were still ongoing, with rescue cutters working the area around the boat's last known position.
