On July 20, projectiles struck Kavomaleas in the Strait of Hormuz. The ship flew a Malta flag and was operated by Greece's Dynacom Tankers Management. A fire broke out in the engine room. The crew tried the onboard suppression systems. They could not put it out. The master ordered an evacuation.
All crew members left the ship safely. Oman authorities located them at sea and brought them ashore.
Kavomaleas was the second Dynacom ship hit near Hormuz in the same period. The company's VLCC Acheloos had also been struck off the Omani coast. A tug was later sent to assist the abandoned Kavomaleas, which was still on fire when the first reports came in.
