Ex-ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi Stops in Colombo on Final Leg to Indonesia

The ex-ITS Giuseppe Garibaldi, the former Italian aircraft carrier on its delivery voyage to Indonesia, made a replenishment stop in Colombo from 9 to 12 September 2026. Sri Lanka Navy welcomed the 180-metre vessel with traditional naval courtesies upon arrival.

During the port call, the ship's commanding officer, Captain Marco Guerriero, met Rear Admiral Harsha De Silva, Commander Western Naval Area. The crew had time ashore to visit sites around Colombo before the vessel departed on 12 September.

The carrier is heading for Indonesia, where it was scheduled to arrive on 17 September to be commissioned as KRI Gajah Mada. The 180-metre carrier spent more than three decades in Italian Navy service before Indonesia agreed to acquire it. Once formally handed over, it will fly the Indonesian flag as part of the country's effort to build a carrier capability.
