On 24 August 2026, the aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi left Taranto. A flag-lowering ceremony at the port marked the end of the ship's service under the Italian flag. The ship had served in the Italian Navy since 1985.
Italy transferred the ship to Indonesia free of charge, a deal authorized by the Italian parliament earlier this year. The ship is now sailing toward Indonesia.
Indonesia will rename it KRI Gajah Mada. It will be the country's first aircraft carrier. Arrival is expected around 20 September, and a formal commissioning ceremony is scheduled for 25 September, with President Prabowo Subianto expected to attend.
The route runs through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea. The crossing is expected to take roughly three weeks.
Once in Indonesia, the ship is due to make its first public appearance at the 81st TNI anniversary celebrations in October 2026.
