The KM Nurul Salsa was carrying 78 people when its engine failed on July 16. The ship went down about 43 nautical miles from Benteng port in the Selayar Islands of South Sulawesi. One person was confirmed dead.
On Saturday evening, rescuers pulled five survivors from the sea, including a seven-year-old girl who had been holding on to a fish trap. The next day, fishermen found a 46-year-old woman and her 24-year-old son stranded on Balaloho Island, one of the small islands in the Selayar chain.
More than 200 people were involved in the search, including troops, police, and local fishing crews. Waves reached three meters. Eighteen were still missing as of July 19.
