Iran fired missiles at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan on July 18. Two American service members were killed. One is missing.
The United States launched strikes on Iran that night. It was the seventh consecutive night of attacks since the Hormuz conflict resumed, and the first to follow the killing of American troops in Jordan.
The US military said the strikes were aimed at degrading Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The naval blockade on Iranian shipping had been reimposed four days earlier, on July 14, after a ceasefire between the two sides collapsed.
Iran and the US have now hit each other across the region.
