Two Ships Hit by Projectiles Near the Strait of Hormuz

Two ships were struck by unknown projectiles near the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday, the UK Maritime Trade Operations centre (UKMTO) reported.

The first was hit about 17 nautical miles northwest of Mina Saqr, UAE, at around 08:05 UTC. A fire broke out but was extinguished and the ship carried on.

A second ship was struck roughly two hours later, about 50 nautical miles north of Muscat, Oman, at 09:50 UTC. A fire was brought under control.

No names were released. Neither UKMTO nor any other report attributed the attacks to a party.

The attacks came days after Iran's IRGC claimed to have targeted 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz, including oil tankers. MarineRadar had 252 devices viewing ships across the Ras al-Khaimah, Gulf of Oman and Hormuz area in the 48 hours before the attacks. Oil tanker rates on the Gulf of Oman to China route had hit record highs by September 11 as traffic through the strait contracted.
