BYD has ordered 10 more pure car and truck carriers from China Merchants Industry. Multiple maritime publications confirmed the deal this week. Each new carrier will have a 9,200-vehicle capacity.
China Merchants Industry will build them at its Jinling and Haimen shipyards. Deliveries run from 2027 to 2029. The order takes BYD's count from eight to 18 carriers and pushes combined capacity past 130,000 car-equivalent units.
BYD EXPLORER NO.1 is currently sailing from Ningbo toward Southampton, due to arrive around 22 September. MarineRadar tracked 13 unique devices watching it in the past 48 hours. That is a sixfold jump from its recent baseline.
Once all 18 carriers are operating, BYD expects to move roughly one million vehicles per year on its own fleet. New Zealand deliveries aboard BYD-flagged carriers are expected from late 2027 or early 2028.
