An engine room fire forced the crew of Min Jiang Kou to leave the carrier about 630 miles south of Costa Rica on Aug. 6. All 22 crew were rescued.
The US Coast Guard received a distress alert from the Marshall Islands-flagged carrier at 1:09 p.m. local time. The crew first tried to suppress the fire using the carrier's carbon dioxide system. When smoke increased, the captain ordered the crew into lifeboats. He stayed on board.
The Min Jiang Kou is a 2024-built, 72,255-gross-ton LNG dual-fuel car carrier operated by COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers. It can carry 7,500 vehicles. The Coast Guard said there were no reported environmental impacts from the fire.
Resolve Marine has been contracted for salvage and recovery.
