About Assens Bagfyr Lighthouse
Built in 1900, the Assens Bagfyr is a square, tapered tower constructed of wood. Standing 8 meters tall, it was originally painted to serve as a rear range light, assisting vessels navigating into the nearby port. The tower has been inactive since 1976. It is now painted a dark brown, a measure intended to prevent it from being mistaken for an active navigational aid. The structure is located about 150 meters southwest of Assens' waterfront.
Why it matters: This former rear range light, paired with a front light, was essential for guiding ships into Assens harbor. Its current state reflects the evolution of maritime navigation aids.
