US, Iran and Oman Near 60-Day Deal to Reopen the Strait of Hormuz

The United States, Iran and Oman were close to a 60-day agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz on August 5. Iran's leadership completed its internal approval on Tuesday, according to Axios. An announcement was expected as early as Wednesday.

Ships entering the Persian Gulf would follow a northern route through Iranian territorial waters under the arrangement being finalized. Outbound ships would take a southern lane through Omani waters. No transit fees would apply during the 60-day window, according to Axios and Israel Hayom.

The parties were also working to clear naval mines from the main shipping lane within 30 days, with two-way traffic expected to follow under a longer-term deal to be negotiated separately by Iran and Oman once the mines were removed.

Al Jazeera reported on August 2 that Iran had described its Oman negotiations as being in their 'final stages'.
