Two oil tankers operated by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company were struck by drones Thursday evening as they passed through the Strait of Hormuz. The United Arab Emirates blamed Iran and described the attacks as piracy.
No crew members were hurt. Both tankers took minor damage, confirmed by the UK Maritime Trade Operations Center. The UAE foreign ministry said the strikes were a "flagrant violation" of the UN principle of freedom of navigation.
Iran did not respond to the accusation. The Strait of Hormuz links the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, and roughly a fifth of the world's oil moves through it. Tensions over Iranian control of the waterway have been building for months between Tehran, Washington, and Gulf states.
