Iran Moves to Ban US and Israeli Ships from the Strait of Hormuz

Iran's parliament announced on August 6 a draft plan to ban ships linked to the United States and Israel from the Strait of Hormuz and impose a toll on commercial ships from other countries passing through the waterway.

The US rejected the proposal. A US official said the strait is an international waterway and that no single party controls access to it. According to NPR, the draft would charge ships up to 7 percent of cargo value for passage and fine violators 20 percent.

Iran said it was also finalizing a separate shipping agreement with Oman, which sits on the southern side of the strait.
