On 19 August 2026, the UAE suspended all trade with Iran. The announcement came hours after Iranian ballistic missiles struck UAE territory. Shelter-in-place warnings went out nationwide.
Dubai supplies roughly a third of all Iranian imports. Analysts cited by multiple outlets said the embargo could prove more damaging to Iran than existing US sanctions. Iran has long relied on informal trade routes through UAE-based intermediaries for goods that bypass Western restrictions.
Trade now stops. The Strait of Hormuz runs directly alongside this corridor and is among the world's most critical maritime chokepoints. On the day of the attack, MarineRadar tracked 302 unique device pings near Ras al-Khaimah and 187 near Qeshm County, Iran, both above baseline for those cells. The strait carries approximately 20 percent of the world's traded oil.
The UAE has not said what conditions would lift the embargo. Ballistic missiles on UAE soil, shelter-in-place orders, indefinite trade suspension: the escalation compressed into a single day.
