Tanker Acers hit by multiple strikes in Arabian Gulf
AI illustrationOn October 7, 2026, at around 1900 UTC, the Acers took multiple projectile hits about 58 nautical miles north of Madinat ash Shamal on the northern coast of Qatar. The Antigua-flagged tanker is Greek-managed and rated at 50,000 dwt. Casualties were reported. UKMTO did not detail them in its initial notification.
The strike broke a brief quiet period in the western Arabian Gulf. Most attacks over the preceding weeks had clustered at or just inside the Strait of Hormuz. The week of September 29 to October 5 had already logged the highest number of tanker strikes of any week since Iran entered the conflict, and the Acers attack came just two days into the following week.
Traffic data through the Strait told the same story. Visible crude tanker transits fell to 7 per day on October 6, far below the roughly 125 that passed daily before the war began. Total crude flows out of the Gulf dropped around 27 percent to 10.1 million barrels per day, hitting levels not seen since the worst weeks of July. Earlier in the same week, 12 crew aboard MT On Peace were injured when it was hit in the Strait of Hormuz, and the Dynacom tanker Lipsi was the sixth tanker struck in the Strait of Hormuz in a week the week prior.
The Acers was hundreds of miles from the strait when it was hit. The threat zone now extends well into the broader Gulf. Oil prices ticked higher in early Asian trading on October 8 as reports spread.
