Water Ingress Caused MSC Hermes III Evacuation Off Vietnam
AI illustrationA container ship operated by MSC was abandoned at sea east of Vietnam last month after water flooded the engine room. The company released its cause statement on October 2.
The crew of MSC Hermes III sent a distress alert at about 8:45 on the morning of September 22. Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority broadcast a rescue request to nearby ships. Three responded. All 25 crew had already boarded a lifeboat by then, and MSC Ruby recovered them safely.
The ship drifted without power, its AIS showing it as not under command. Tugs were eventually dispatched, and MSC Hermes III reached Vung Tau on Vietnam's south coast on September 24 for cargo discharge, investigation, and repairs.
One crew member was injured during the evacuation. Both MSC and Singapore's MPA confirmed all 25 sailors got off safely. The injured crew member is recovering.
MSC Hermes III carries 2,490 TEU and is registered in Liberia.
