MV Westerland Cleared in Fiji Harbour Cleanup

Workers in Fiji removed the abandoned MV Westerland from Mosquito Island's shoreline in Lami Bay on October 6, 2026. The vessel was the third cleared under the Suva Harbour Cleanup Programme, which aims to remove 17 priority wrecks from the harbour and its approaches. Fourteen remain. The Waitt Foundation committed $2.25 million to fund the removals. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has cited the cleanups as part of Fiji's environmental preparations ahead of COP31, the climate conference the country is due to host.

Abandoned hulls have drawn attention in recent days: a nor'easter exposed an 1884 schooner wreck at Nantucket after storms shifted the sand.
