South Korea’s PANSTAR ACRO heads north on first Arctic container trial

The PANSTAR ACRO left Busan on August 22. South Korea's first commercial Arctic container ship trial was underway.

The 2,758-TEU vessel is carrying 837 containers of auto parts and chemicals to ports including Felixstowe, Rotterdam and Gdansk. Operator Pan Star estimates the voyage will take 40 to 45 days, running through the Northern Sea Route via the Bering Sea and Russian Arctic waters. The Suez route covers the same distance in 30 to 35 days.

South Korea's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries is backing the trial. Seoul says the project is commercially driven, aimed at finding an alternative to Suez congestion and reducing freight costs for exporters targeting northern European ports. Russia will provide icebreaker escort for sections of the passage, charging transit fees for access.

That fee arrangement has attracted criticism. The United States, Britain and European partners have raised concerns that using Russia's Arctic corridor gives Moscow revenue and a veneer of legitimacy while those same governments enforce sanctions on Russian trade. Seoul has not indicated it intends to cancel the trial.

If the voyage completes without incident, Pan Star plans a regular Arctic service from 2027 using two ships. The seasonal window for Arctic transit is roughly four months per year.
