Late on 10 September, four unidentified projectiles hit two vessels roughly four nautical miles west of Khasab, at the southern approach to the Strait of Hormuz. One ship caught fire. The condition of the second was not immediately known. UKMTO issued Warning 133-26 at 1910 UTC after the master of a third vessel reported seeing the strikes from about six nautical miles away.
No group has claimed the attacks. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations did not attribute them to Iran, the United States, or any other party.
The incident added to a sequence of attacks moving closer to Oman's Musandam Peninsula. On 31 August, the Saudi VLCC SIDR was struck by three projectiles while exiting the strait 17 nautical miles east of Khasab. On 8 September, US Central Command sank the tanker M/T Kylo in the Gulf of Oman. The day before the Khasab strikes, Iran's IRGC said it had targeted ten ships near Hormuz, including US-linked vessels and oil tankers.
Brent crude briefly rose above $100 per barrel after the strikes, according to Gulf News. Shipping insurance costs in the Hormuz corridor have risen sharply over recent months.
