A fire tore through the passenger ferry Mutiara Sentosa 2 on Sunday morning as it crossed the Java Sea, leaving five people dead and 41 others missing.

The ferry had 232 passengers and 39 crew aboard when the blaze broke out between 6 AM and 7 AM local time. It was sailing from Surabaya in East Java to Makassar in South Sulawesi.

By Sunday afternoon, Indonesia's search and rescue agency counted 225 survivors pulled from the water. Forty-one people remained unaccounted for. Thick black smoke was visible in videos from the scene.

Nine vessels were dispatched to assist. The cause of the fire had not been established.
