Siglunes Lighthouse

Fl White 7.5s🇮🇸ISOperational

The Siglunes lighthouse, built in 1908, is the oldest light on Iceland's northern coast. The lighthouse features a 12-meter-tall, cylindrical concrete tower, painted yellow and topped with a red lantern and gallery. It is connected to a single-story concrete keeper's dwelling. The light source is situated at a focal height of 46 meters, projecting a white flash every 7.5 seconds for a distance of 18.1 nautical miles. The site previously included a wooden keeper's cottage and a white daymark with a red stripe. The original Fresnel lens, transferred from the Reykjanes lighthouse, was taken out in 1992 and is now exhibited at the Herring Era Museum. The lighthouse's 100th anniversary was observed in 2008.

Why it matters: This structure marks a northern cape of Iceland, serving as a navigation aid for ships in the region. Its distinction as the oldest lighthouse on the north coast and the retention of its original lens contribute to its maritime historical significance.
