Akranes Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Akranes Lighthouse
The Akranes lighthouse is a square concrete tower constructed in 1947, standing 13 meters tall with a focal height of 24 meters. It is located 0.6 km from the nearest port of Akranes. The lighthouse emits two white flashes every 20 seconds, with the light color changing to red or green depending on the direction. This newer structure replaced an original lighthouse built in 1918, which remains inactive to the south. The site is open to the public, although the tower itself is closed.
Why it matters: The lighthouse is essential for safe navigation along Iceland's western coastline, guiding vessels approaching the port of Akranes and warning of hazards within Faxaflói bay.
