About Hjalteyri Lighthouse
Hjalteyri Lighthouse, erected in 1920, is located on the western shore of Eyjafjörður, close to the settlement of Hjalteyri. The construction is a red, square pyramidal skeletal tower, 14 meters in height, complete with a lantern and gallery. It exhibits a light pattern of two white, red, or green flashes every 20 seconds, offering a visible range of 11.6 nautical miles. The lighthouse sits on a spit that shelters the village harbor, about 20 kilometers north of Akureyri. Public access to the tower's gallery is no longer permitted.
Why it matters: This lighthouse serves as a navigation aid for craft approaching Hjalteyri's harbor, using its multi-color directional light to mark safe passage.
