Four Portuguese nationals went missing in the Velebit Channel on Wednesday. Their inflatable boat was caught in rough weather off Croatia's Adriatic coast.
Two were found. Two men remained missing by nightfall.
The group had set out from a campsite. Conditions deteriorated quickly once they were on the water. The Velebit Channel is a narrow passage between the Velebit mountain range on the Croatian mainland and the islands of Krk, Rab and Pag to the west. Waves reached three metres. Gusts made search operations difficult for the coast guard crews working the area.
Portugal's foreign ministry confirmed nationals were involved. The survivors' condition was not publicly disclosed.
