An engine failure has taken Croatia's largest ferry out of service, cancelling routes between Croatia and Italy at the height of the Adriatic summer.
The Dalmacija broke down on August 17. No cause has been given. Jadrolinija, the Croatian state ferry operator, announced cancellations across its Croatia-Italy network, with the Dubrovnik-Bari service suspended until further notice. The company offered no repair timeline.
The timing was bad. August is peak season on the Adriatic, and Italian travelers were still moving in large numbers after the Ferragosto holiday period when the breakdown struck. Passengers and freight operators were left looking for alternatives on routes that normally run at capacity in August.
On MarineRadar, the Croatian coast saw 122 unique devices tracking the area in the 48 hours following the breakdown. Sixty-seven were still active in the most recent 24 hours.
