Syria's main port on the Mediterranean had not seen a Turkish naval visit since 2011, when the civil war began. The frigate TCG Istanbul led the call, with Admiral Ercument Tatlioglu, Turkey's Naval Forces Commander, on board.
Ankara and Damascus were estranged for over a decade. Relations shifted after Assad left in late 2024. The July port call came shortly after Turkey hosted a NATO summit that Syria's President Ahmed al-Sharaa attended, and Turkey has reported plans to build naval facilities along the Syrian coast.
