Sanctioned Russian Tanker Pioner 1 Drifts Without Power in Marmara

A sanctioned Russian crude oil tanker lost engine power in the Sea of Marmara on 5 September 2026, drifting until Turkish authorities were able to tow it to safety.

The tanker, Pioner 1, became unresponsive after its engine failed. Turkish coast guard crews were dispatched to the scene and secured the tanker, eventually towing it to Tekirdağ on the northern coast of the Marmara. No casualties or pollution were reported.

Pioner 1 is a sanctioned Russian tanker. It had been carrying crude oil at the time of the breakdown and was transiting the Turkish Straits when the engine failure occurred.

The Marmara has been the site of several maritime incidents in recent weeks. Three days before the Pioner 1 breakdown, Turkish prosecutors had detained the crew of the ALSU tanker following a collision in the same waters that left 10 people missing.
