APM Terminals breaks ground on $550m Laldia terminal in Chattogram

APM Terminals broke ground on a new container terminal at Laldia in Chattogram on August 31, 2026. The project is a $550 million public-private partnership between Bangladesh and Denmark.

At full capacity, the terminal will handle more than 800,000 TEU a year and accommodate ships of up to 6,000 TEU, more than double Chattogram port's current limit of around 2,800 TEU. The facility is due to open in 2030.

APM Terminals will design, finance, build and run the facility under a 30-year concession with the Chittagong Port Authority and QNS Container Services. Bangladesh retains ownership of the port asset throughout.

Chattogram handles roughly 93 percent of the country's import-export trade, according to the Maritime Executive. The terminal is meant to cut congestion there and reduce logistics costs for Bangladesh's textile and garment exporters.

The design also emphasises sustainability. Equipment will include electrified cranes, solar installations and shore-power systems, which APM Terminals says will make the Laldia facility the country's first low-emission container port.
