Norway seized the Professor Molchanov at Barentsburg on September 2, 2026. It is a Russian state-owned expedition cruise ship. Barentsburg is a port in Svalbard, the Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic.
Naftogaz triggered the action. The company is chasing a $4.22 billion Hague arbitration ruling against Russia for assets Moscow seized when it took Crimea in 2014, and the Nord-Troms and Senja District Court had issued an enforcement order the previous Monday.
Enforcement is spreading. Actions against Russian assets are now running in roughly ten countries, Euronews reported, and Russian state property has already been seized in Finland and France. Naftogaz said it would keep going until the debt is paid.
