Qatar's Ministry of Transport suspended all maritime activity on July 12, ordering owners of fishing boats, leisure craft, and jet skis to stop sailing immediately. No end date was given.
The Ministry of Interior raised Qatar's security threat level to high and told residents to stay inside their homes or in safe places.
Iran had declared the Strait of Hormuz closed the day before, after Iranian forces struck a container ship on July 11. The US launched fresh air strikes on Iranian targets overnight. Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain all reported drone or missile threats; Qatar said some residents had been hurt by falling debris from interceptions.
This is the second time Qatar has suspended maritime activity in recent weeks. The first came on June 28, after Iran attacked the Qatari LNG tanker Al Rekayyat in the strait. That suspension ran six days before being lifted on July 5. No timeline has been given for this one.
