TIRRANNA becomes first ship to carry an Oceanbird rigid wing sail at sea

The car carrier TIRRANNA completed sea trials on July 1 with a 40-metre rigid wing sail bolted to its deck. The Wing560, made by Oceanbird, had been installed at Damen Shipyard Rotterdam over three days in late June.

TIRRANNA is now the first commercial ship to carry this type of sail in working service. After the trials concluded, the ship returned to its transatlantic route. Oceanbird technicians sailed with the vessel to track how the sail performs at sea.

Oceanbird, which is part of Alfa Laval, describes the Wing560 as a rigid wind propulsion device. It stands 40 metres above the deck. Wallenius Wilhelmsen, which operates TIRRANNA, is the shipowner.

The installation took three days. The sea acceptance phase added about a week before the ship was cleared to resume commercial operations.
