DP World Signs 50-Year Deal to Build Fujairah Terminals Outside Hormuz

On July 22, DP World signed a preliminary 50-year deal with Fujairah Ports Authority to build two deepwater terminals on the UAE's east coast, outside the Strait of Hormuz. The agreement covers two sites: Al Rugaylat, a container terminal with 2.5 million TEU of annual capacity built to take Ultra Large Container Vessels, and the Dibba General Cargo Terminal, adding 3.6 million tonnes of annual throughput. Both are on the Gulf of Oman.

First-phase construction is expected to take about 30 months. The new terminals will link to Jebel Ali, DP World's main port on the Arabian Gulf side, through an inland logistics corridor.

The US-Iran war cut container volumes through Jebel Ali, which sits inside the Hormuz chokepoint. Fujairah faces the Gulf of Oman and gives shipping lines a way to reach the UAE without transiting through the strait.
