West Side Bonavista Bay Lighthouses Lighthouse

This octagonal lighthouse stands on a small island in Bonavista Bay, approximately 6 miles southeast of Cape Freels, marking the bay's northern entrance. Constructed in 1880, the original round cast iron tower was encased in concrete in 1960, altering its shape and increasing its height. The tower is painted with horizontal red and white bands and rises 15 meters, with the light positioned at a focal height of 22.5 meters. It emits a white flash every 5 seconds, visible for 13.7 nautical miles. The keeper's house was demolished in 1960, but a fog signal building and generator house remain on site.

Why it matters: The lighthouse's evolution from a cast iron tower to a concrete-encased structure reflects changing construction methods for enduring harsh marine conditions. Its continued operation ensures safe passage into Bonavista Bay for vessels approaching from the north.
