About Active Pass Lighthouse
Also known as: Active Pass (Georgina Point, Mayne Island)
A 2-story wood keeper's house, built in 1940, formerly held a lantern at the peak of its roof. The station was first established in 1885, but the original tower was replaced by the current structure. Its active service as a light station ended in 1969 when the lantern was removed. The lighthouse was recognized as a heritage lighthouse in 2014. The property is now maintained as a public park.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is important for navigating Active Pass, a deep and twisting channel essential for ferry routes and other marine traffic moving between the Strait of Georgia and Swartz Bay. Its unique architectural form offers a historical perspective on lighthouse design.
