Way Shoal Lighthouse

Structure: Way Shoal Lighthouse once guided vessels navigating the Ottawa River near Thurso, a vital artery for commerce and travel in the late 19th century. Established in 1870, its light would have pierced the river's mists and evening darkness, warning mariners away from the treacherous Way Shoal. This particular stretch of the Ottawa River, with its shifting currents and submerged hazards, demanded reliable navigational aids to ensure safe passage for steamboats carrying timber, goods, and passengers between communities. For 36 years, the lighthouse served its purpose, a quiet guardian on the water. However, its operational life concluded in 1906, and over time, the structure succumbed to the elements or was dismantled. Today, no physical trace of the Way Shoal Lighthouse remains on the river, leaving only its name in historical records as a reminder of the early efforts to tame and navigate the expansive Ottawa River.
