About Verdougi Islets Lighthouse
Also known as: Berdugi
Built in 1884, this lighthouse stands on the Verdougi (Berdugi) Islets in Greece. The structure consists of a square stone tower, 8 meters high, rising from a single-story stone keeper's house. Constructed from stone, the tower and attached dwelling were designed for practical use in a remote location. The lighthouse served to mark the small landmasses and surrounding shallow waters, which presented navigational challenges. Its location in the Attica region, near the Municipality of Marathonas, placed it within a significant maritime area.
Why it matters: The lighthouse was essential for marking the Verdougi Islets, a cluster of small landmasses that could pose a significant hazard to shipping in the surrounding Greek waters.
