About Ágios Nikólaos Lighthouse
Also known as: Ágios Nikólaos (Ródos)
This stone lighthouse stands 6 meters tall, with its light situated 24 meters above sea level. It is a cylindrical white stone tower built in 1863 by the Ottomans, erected atop the 14th-century Fortress of St. Nicholas. The light emits a single white flash every 12 seconds and has a geographic range of 14.1 nautical miles. Originally, its lantern was removed and the light was housed in a skeletal tower, but a restoration in 2007 reactivated the original structure. It is located at the end of the main breakwater on the east side of the harbor of Ródos, marking the entrance to the port.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's unique integration with the 14th-century Fortress of St. Nicholas provides a rare blend of medieval military architecture and modern maritime navigation, making it a significant landmark.
