About Store Færder Lighthouse
The Store Færder lighthouse stands on the northern end of Store Færder island, marking the southwestern entrance to Oslofjorden. A square wooden tower with a lantern and gallery, it stands 5.5 meters tall with a focal height of 12.5 meters. The light emits three flashes per cycle, alternating between white, red, and green, over a 5-second period, visible for 11.2 nautical miles. The original fire tower station was established in 1697, with a replacement tower built in 1802. A Fresnel lens was added to the previous structure in 1852. The current lighthouse is operational and the site is open to the public, though the tower itself is closed.
Why it matters: This light is important for vessels navigating the busy southwestern approach to Oslofjorden, offering directional guidance. The ruins of the 1802 stone foundation provide a unique historical perspective on Norway's maritime heritage.
