Östergarnsholm Västra Lighthouse

🇸🇪Gotland Municipality, SEOperational

Östergarnsholm Västra lighthouse, a round cylindrical stone tower, was built in 1817 on the western end of Östergarnsholm island. Initially, it operated using a coal fire. In 1849, the structure was enhanced with the installation of a lantern, which increased its height and visibility. During this construction, a temporary light was maintained from a separate rubblestone tower. The lighthouse ceased operations in 1919, with its lantern being moved to a new facility. The unpainted stone tower, now 18 meters tall, retains its gallery but the lantern has been removed.

Why it matters: This lighthouse illustrates the technological progression of navigational aids, moving from coal fires to installed lanterns, and demonstrates the continuous efforts to improve maritime safety through structural upgrades.
