About Southeast Bay Lighthouse

Built in 1877, the Southeast Bay lighthouse is a square pyramidal wood tower standing 9 meters tall. It is situated on the southeastern shore of Lake Nipissing, west of Callander, marking the narrow entrance to the lake's easternmost basin. The structure, painted white with a red vertical stripe along the former range line, originally served as part of a navigational range. This system guided vessels into the lake and toward the town of Callander.
Why it matters: The light was critical for navigating the narrow channel into Lake Nipissing's eastern basin, facilitating access to Callander. Its history as a range light converted to a sector light reflects changes in maritime navigation on inland waters.
