About Søndre Katland Lighthouse
Also known as: Søndre Katland (Søndre Kattland, Søre Katland)
Søndre Katland Lighthouse was built in 1878. The structure consists of a square cylindrical masonry tower, standing 15 meters tall, which rises from one corner of a two-story keeper's house. A lantern and gallery are positioned at the top of the tower. The lighthouse is located on an island at the entrance to the Lyngdfjorden, about 4.5 km southeast of Farsund. Its light displays three white or red flashes followed by green flashes every 12 seconds, with a geographic range of 12.9 nautical miles. The lighthouse has been unoccupied since 1947.
Why it matters: The lighthouse is important for safe passage into the Lyngdfjorden. Its integrated design, with the tower emerging from the keeper's house, is a distinctive example of Norwegian lighthouse architecture.
