About Skjoldnæs Lighthouse
Also known as: Skjoldnæs (Shield Point)
The cylindrical lighthouse, built of granite and brick, stands 22 meters tall and was first lit in 1881. Its dark gray stone tower features a lantern and gallery, and it is attached to a two-story red brick keeper's house with granite trim. The light emits a white flash every 30 seconds, visible for 15.7 nautical miles. The original rotating mechanism is preserved within the tower. In 2006, a golf course was established on the light station property, with the keeper's house converted into the clubhouse.
Why it matters: Skjoldnæs Lighthouse marks the northwestern tip of Ærø, assisting vessels in the surrounding Danish waters. Its construction from Bornholm granite is a notable aspect of its material history.
