Saugeen River Range Rear Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Saugeen River Range Rear Lighthouse
Built in 1903, this wooden square pyramidal tower stands 10 meters tall, with its focal plane at 20 meters. Painted white with red trim and a red vertical stripe, its lantern roof is also red. The lighthouse emits a single green flash, guiding vessels along a specific range line. Public protests in 1989 successfully advocated for the preservation of its traditional shingle siding over proposed aluminum replacement. The tower became town property in June 2012 and is recognized as a Heritage Lighthouse. While the site is open to visitors, the tower itself remains closed.
Why it matters: This Heritage Lighthouse guides vessels along the range line into the Saugeen River, ensuring safe passage. Its preservation was a result of public protests, highlighting its value to the local community.
