About Saltnes Lighthouse
The Saltnes Lighthouse is a 7.5-meter metal square skeletal tower covered with siding, topped with a lantern and gallery. Its focal height reaches 8 meters. The structure displays a directional light with two white flashes every 8 seconds, showing white, red, or green depending on the direction. This light has a geographic range of 9.7 nautical miles. The lighthouse is situated on the south side of the Moldefjord entrance, opposite the town of Selje. The site is open to the public, but the tower itself remains closed.
Why it matters: Saltnes Lighthouse is indispensable for safe navigation into the Moldefjord, particularly for vessels approaching from the south. Its unique directional light, which changes color based on the approach angle, provides precise guidance through the fjord's entrance, warning mariners of specific channels and potential hazards.
