Saltholmen Lighthouse

White 5s🇳🇴Lillesand, NOOperational

Built in 1882, Saltholmen Lighthouse stands on a small island approximately two kilometers southeast of Lillesand. The structure consists of an octagonal concrete lantern room with a steeply pyramidal roof, attached to a one-and-a-half-story keeper's house made of concrete with a slate roof. The lighthouse's focal height reaches 10 meters, and its light previously emitted two white flashes every 5 seconds. Although the light was deactivated in 1952, the property was transferred to the Stiftelsen Saltholmen Fyrstasjon foundation in 2012. A group called Saltholmens Venner was formed to assist with maintenance, and the site is now open to the public, though the tower remains closed.

Why it matters: The lighthouse's historical function was to guide vessels into the harbor of Lillesand. Its unique architecture also represents a notable example of Norwegian coastal light stations.
