Ramsund Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Ramsund Lighthouse
The Ramsund lighthouse is a square tower with a lantern and gallery, standing 6.5 meters tall with a focal height of 8.5 meters. Its white structure is topped by a red lantern roof. Operational since at least the early 20th century, it emits an occulting white, red, or green light that changes every six seconds, depending on the approach. This light has a geographic range of 9.9 nautical miles. The lighthouse is situated on the north side of the Ofotfjord, marking the eastern edge of the Ramsund passage between Tjeldøy island and the mainland. While the site is open to visitors, the tower itself remains closed.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is essential for guiding vessels through the Ramsund, a narrow passage connecting to the Ofotfjord. Its directional and color-changing light assists ships in navigating this potentially challenging waterway.
